massa da luz Ferreira Gullar apresentação da exposição de 1991 na Galeria Aktuell no Rio de Janeiro |
The mass of light Painting, sculpture, gravure - are all arts of light: of light and shadow, of light and color, of light and opacity. The simple expression visual arts already indicates that light filiation. Yes, because seeing is captivating light. The absence of light is the absence of forms and colors - vision absence. Therefore, each in it's own way, the paiting, the gravure, the sculpture deals with light, which is the essencial matter of look. The sculpture, which traditionally uses opaque material, like stone, faces the challenge of, by the surface's modulation, illuminate the dark core. Because in the stone is always night, darkness, which the artist wants to dissipate. This fight made the modern sculpture change the mass for the absence of the mass - the empty light-colored. Edgard Gordilho, while choosing a polyester resin, chose a new way of dealing with the light and the form. Using matter wich is permeable to light the sculpture's languege has to be another one: it's not by modulating the surface to win the mass's opacity, which in this case doesn't exist: the light it self that modulates the surface trespasses the form, divulges it. The "methaphysics" darkness of the stone disappears by real action of the light. That is why Gordilho's sculptures seen as if they were made by light, solid and arrested light, slowly light, turned flat, volume, surface, texture. And in this deal with the new material which demands a new language, he went inventing this same language, in the contrast of the definitive form and the indefinitive form, of the finished and the unfinished, the birth of the form in it's light placenta. And little by little the color appears, a color only possible there and that takes the risk of turning decorative, a simple ornament of the form. But he notices this and fight against it, to integrate it in the articulated voice of his sculpture, in his luminated globules, imaginary planets which induces us to dream. Ferreira Gullar |
